Young and dumb, I went to Viet Nam three times while serving as a gunners mate in the Navy. During my second tour I was attached to River Squadron 533 out of My Tho, We lived in hotels and our boats were dock at a fortified park on the river. I was there during the Tet offensive when the usual early morning Viet Cong mortar attack didn't stop with its normal 2 or 3 rounds. It just kept on going. After eating a quick meal, we jumped in our jeeps and headed down to the park. On the way, we came under small arms fire. At the park, we loaded up on "C" rations and ammo all the while receiving sporadic machine gun and sniper fire. The whole outfit pulled out and the city was overrun by the V.C. Several days later My Tho was retaken by U.S. forces but it was pretty much destroyed. Years later, while working as a counselor for Ventura County in California, a young Vietnamese man came in because he had a D.W.I. He brought an interpreter with him and during the interview I learned that he had been a child in My Tho during the time I served there. A very emotional "blast from the past" for me as I was transported back in time and the memory of a battle lost and a city in ruins. jmayton@coastalnet.com

Her full name was Mai Thi Cuc' and she was Cambodian. She worked in the mess hall of the old Catholic Seminary which served as Headquarters for MACV Advisory Team 75 and the 7th ARVN Infantry Division. You are right when you say that no ex GI could ever forget Mai. She was not only very beautiful, but she was also a perfect lady and would never see any GI outside of her job. After the fall of the South Vietnamese regime there was a lot of persecution of Cambodians in Vietnam, so many of them returned to Cambodia. I don't know if Mai did or not. But if she did she would have been there for the reign of the Khymer Rouge and the Killing Fields. God help her. I remember her still with affection and respect.

I was an interrogator for tm 75, assigned to the Kien Giang area. We were billeted in an old French Seminary outside Mytho on the road going to Saigon. We had a quite well known mess hall in 1968-1969 there. We worked closely with the ARVN 7th. We had two interpreters, a Sgt Trang and a Sgt Hai. I went back there in 1995, and couldn't get in because they were using it as a police academy. It looked totally differnt than when I was there, to the point where I almost didn't recognize it. I asked around about the interpreters, but no one knew anything unfortunately. I briefly explored the town, and the areas we used to frequent were still pretty much the same. It's a quiet little town, and the people are very friendly. I would recommend visiting if you are in that area. One can take river tours, go up the channels, and visit the coconut monks island there. The food in Vietnam is fabulous, very fresh and cheap. If someone wishes to correspond, email me at fgleich@cableone.net Good luck to you
