Lisa Carver is my hero. Reading her book in the sunlight of the San Leandro kitchen really made me feel good. She had the prototypical good encounter with a beloved celebrity (in her case, GG Allin). On the one hand she was confronted with the fact that he is only human, and on the other hand she had the luck and excellence to recognize aspects of herself in him. I hope that happens just a little when I meet her in November at her reading.

Sometimes, renovating and "restoring" churches can go overboard. Perhaps in an ill-guided attempt to restore the fantastic colors of the 250yr old church of San Miguel Arcangel, the parish priest decided to refurbish the interiors and covered the centuries-old retablo (main altar) with gold. About 2 years ago, the main altar looked exactly like the 2 glorious altars flanking at its side.
Sacrilege? Fortunately, the ceiling was left intact.

Don't blame me, that's what it's called... If it was reasonably on time this must have been train #175, scheduled to leave Fresno at 3.20 pm, to Oakland at 7:25 pm. The locomotive is a P32-8 built by General Electric in 1991. Amtrak California has two of these; most of their trains are pulled by the somewhat sleeker-looking F40PHI's.
